Contact UsChoosing the right flooring involves balancing aesthetics, durability, cost, and maintenance. Each flooring type has unique characteristics that make it suitable for different rooms and lifestyles. Accurate material estimation is the first step toward a successful flooring project, whether you are a DIY homeowner or a professional contractor.
| Layout Direction | Waste Factor | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 10% | Rectangular rooms, beginners |
| Diagonal | 15% | Visual interest, hiding imperfections |
Always round up when purchasing materials. It is better to have extra flooring for future repairs than to run short during installation.
| Type | Cost Range | Durability | Moisture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood | $6–$12/sq ft | High | Low |
| Laminate | $2–$5/sq ft | Medium | Low |
| Vinyl Plank | $2–$7/sq ft | High | High |
| Carpet | $1–$4/sq ft | Low | Low |
| Engineered Wood | $4–$10/sq ft | High | Medium |
Multiply the room length by its width to get the total square footage. For metric measurements, multiply length in meters by width in meters to get square meters. Always add a waste factor of 10–15% to account for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching. For L-shaped rooms, divide the space into two rectangles, calculate each area separately, and add them together.
A waste factor accounts for material lost during cutting, pattern matching, damaged pieces, and fitting around obstacles like doorways and cabinets. Standard installations typically need 10% extra, while diagonal or patterned layouts require 15% or more due to additional angled cuts. Complex room shapes and less experienced installers should plan for higher waste.
Consider the room's purpose, moisture exposure, foot traffic, and your budget. Hardwood is durable and adds home value but is expensive and sensitive to moisture. Laminate offers a wood look at lower cost. Vinyl plank is waterproof and ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Carpet provides comfort and insulation for bedrooms. Engineered wood handles moisture better than solid hardwood.
Divide the L-shape into two rectangles. Measure the length and width of each rectangle separately. Calculate the area of each rectangle (length × width) and add them together for the total area. Be sure to measure each section at its widest and longest points. Then apply your waste factor to the combined total to determine how much material to purchase.
